What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy treats spider veins by injecting a medication (called a sclerosing agent) directly into the veins using very small needles. The solution irritates the vein, lining causing it to close. This can cause a brief stinging sensation, but it usually fades within 2–3 minutes. Most patients notice improvement right away, though results are different person to person. The number of treatments depends on how severe the veins are and how each patient responds. Some need only one treatment, but most need two or three. With each session, patients typically see gradual improvement, which is very rewarding. We schedule treatments for 1 to 3 months apart so patients can evaluate progress and determine if more sessions are needed.
Compression Stockings
Bring your compression stockings to your visit, they are essential for the best results. They must be properly sized medical-grade stockings with 30–40 mmHg graduated compression. We offer them at a discounted rate: $60 for knee-high and $80 for thigh-high. If you prefer to buy them elsewhere, we can give you a prescription, but you must have the stockings with you at your appointment. You can also order from Amazon, though quality can vary.
Be Aware Of These Possible Side Effects
- Sclerotherapy can make your legs look worse before they look better and often causes bruising
- Results vary—about 20% of patients may see only fair improvement, even after multiple treatments
- Multiple sessions are often needed, depending on how each patient responds
- Bruising is common, though it doesn’t happen to everyone
- Discoloration from trapped blood can last up to a year
- Larger veins may sometimes develop a clot (thrombosis) after injection, forming a tender bump. This may be painful for about three weeks but gradually goes away. It’s not dangerous and actually indicates that the vein was successfully closed.
What If I’m Sensitive to Needles
Sclerotherapy usually causes only mild discomfort and doesn’t require numbing. However, if you’re highly sensitive to pain, you can purchase an over-the-counter numbing cream with 5% lidocaine (available on Amazon). Apply it to the treatment areas right before your visit and cover with saran wrap to boost effectiveness and lasting time. It becomes effective in 20 minutes and lasts about an hour after removing the saran wrap. It can be a bit messy but may help if you’re especially nervous about needles. Most patients tolerate the procedure well without any numbing.
